Redwood Jazz Alliance

Thanks for a Fantastic 2007-2008 Season
We opened with a luminous evening at the Morris Graves Museum of Art in Eureka with Plays Monk, featuring drummer Scott Amendola, clarinetist Ben Goldberg, and bassist Devin Hoff playing...well, Monk. Then, Kenny Werner returned to Fulkerson Recital Hall for a sublime evening of duets with vocalist Claudia Villela. The new year brought a jazz summit with Myra Melford, Marty Ehrlich, Mark Dresser, and Matt Wilson; then, in early March, the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra blew the roof off of Van Duzer Theatre. It rained jazz in April: the Miguel Zenón Quartet dropped jaws in the Kate Buchanan Room, then the David Berkman Trio wowed the crowd at the Morris Graves. And we closed the season in May with a high-energy evening with Ben Allison and Man-Size Safe.

All of this happened because of a) the loyal turnout of avid fans with open ears, eager to hear a variety of major players on the contemporary jazz & improvised music scene; b) the efforts of those players and their agents, who've often gone to extraordinary lengths to come check out life behind the Redwood Curtain; and c) the stalwart support of an elite group of local businesses and individuals, who have liberally contributed money, goods, and services to enhance Humboldt's cultural landscape with world-class jazz.

The New Season Begins in September!
First up: Donny McCaslin Trio
Tuesday, September 9, 2008 (8 p.m.) | Fulkerson Recital Hall, HSU

One of the most electrifying tenors on the current scene, McCaslin took over Chris Potter's spot in the Dave Douglas Quintet and has been a star member of the Maria Schneider orchestra for the past five years. His 2007 CD "In Pursuit" won critical raves, and this fall he'll be touring behind a new trio album featuring bassist Hans Glawischnig and drummer Johnathan Blake.
